Visa Requirement Categories, Explained

Exact requirements are set by the destination's embassy, consulate or immigration authority and vary by country and visa category — see the specific country page for your destination, or run our Eligibility Checker for an indicative read. What follows are the requirement categories that recur across almost every application, so you know what to expect before you start.

Passport Requirements

Valid original passport, commonly with 6 months' validity beyond your travel dates (some destinations ask for less — always confirm)

At least 2 consecutive blank visa pages

Copies of any previous passports and visas, where requested

Financial Requirements

Bank statements showing sufficient, traceable funds for the trip (see our financial documents guide)

Proof of income — salary slips, ITR, or business financials as applicable

Sponsorship letter and the sponsor's documents, if someone else is funding the trip

Photograph Requirements

Recent passport-size photo(s) meeting the destination's exact size and background specification

Plain, light-coloured background, neutral expression, no glasses/headwear unless for religious reasons

Taken recently — most authorities reject photos older than 3–6 months

Country-Specific Eligibility

Purpose-of-travel evidence — invitation letter, hotel booking, employer letter, enrollment proof, etc.

Confirmed or provisional travel itinerary, as required by the destination

Ties to your home country (employment, family, property) that support a genuine intent to return, where relevant to the category
